What to Consider When Choosing a Water Tap for Your Caravan or Motorhome
Choosing the right water tap for your caravan or motorhome is crucial for ensuring functionality and convenience in your water system. Here are some key factors to consider:
1. Type of Water Tap
- Tap with Microswitch: Many caravan and motorhome taps are equipped with a microswitch that activates the water pump when the tap is opened. This is especially common in simpler systems where the pump is not pressure-controlled. If your system uses a microswitch, you need a compatible tap. Check your electrical system to ensure the new tap works properly with the microswitch. If you choose a tap without a microswitch for a system that requires one, the pump will not activate.
- Tap without Microswitch: If your system is pressure-controlled, meaning the pump activates automatically when the pressure drops, you can choose a standard tap without a microswitch. These are easier to install and can be used in more advanced water systems.
- Folding Spout: If the tap is mounted under a cover, such as in kitchen modules with folding lids, you need a tap with a folding spout. This allows you to fold the tap down when not in use and close the lid to save space. Folding taps are also practical in smaller spaces where functionality and flexibility are important.
- Single or Mixer Tap: Choose between a single cold water tap or a mixer tap that provides both hot and cold water, depending on your water system. Mixer taps are particularly important if you have a water heater installed in your caravan or motorhome.
- Additional Features: Consider if you need additional features, such as a pull-out spout (ideal for sinks) or built-in water filters to improve water quality directly at the tap.
2. Shower Mixer
Combined Tap/Shower Mixer: If you have a shower in your caravan or motorhome, a combined tap and shower mixer is common. These save space and can be used both as a standard tap and as a shower. There are various solutions available, so ensure you get the correct connections and check if a microswitch is needed to fit your system. If you are unsure, take photos of both the top and underside of the tap to show the connections and send them to us. We will try to help you find the right tap.
3. Connections and Fittings Under the Bench
Hose Connections: Check what type of connections are used in your current system. The most common are:
- Uniquick Quick-Connects: Quick-connects that are easy to install and often used in modern water systems.
- Push-Fit Connections: Simple to install and require no special tools.
- Threaded Connections: Require hoses to be screwed on and are often used in older systems.
Fit: Ensure that the new tap's connections are compatible with your existing hoses and fittings.
4. Material and Quality
Material Choice: Choose a tap made of stainless steel, brass, or high-quality plastic, depending on your budget and needs. Plastic taps are often lighter and cost-effective, while metal taps are more robust and durable.
Durability: If you travel frequently, it is worth investing in a tap with high durability to ensure long life.
5. Design and Functionality
Ergonomics: Choose a tap that is easy to use, with smooth controls for adjusting water flow.
Spout: For kitchen taps, ensure the spout fits the sink. Sometimes the spout needs to fold, and there may be shelves or other obstacles that limit the maximum height.
Aesthetics: Match the tap with the rest of your caravan or motorhome interior for a cohesive look.
6. Installation and Maintenance of Your Water Tap
- Mounting Hole: Ensure the tap's mounting bracket fits the hole in your bench or sink.
- Easy Installation: Many taps come with hoses/pipes and fittings. Choose one that fits your caravan or motorhome system to simplify installation.
- Spare Parts: Ensure spare parts, such as gaskets and ceramic cartridges, are available for the tap you choose.
By considering these factors, you can choose a water tap that not only fits your existing water system but also contributes to convenient and trouble-free use in your caravan or motorhome. Remember, quality and functionality are key to a long-term solution that can handle many adventures on the road!
